Microphone Test

Check your microphone works — see your voice level live and record a short playback.

This microphone test runs entirely in your browser using the standard getUserMedia API. Your voice is analysed and recorded locally on your device — nothing is uploaded, streamed or stored, and the recording disappears when you close the page.

Press Start, then allow microphone access when your browser asks.
0% — speak at your normal volume; the bar should move and peak in the green/yellow.

Mic working? Record a real memo or voice note with the voice recorder — pause, resume and download included.

How to use

  1. Press "Start microphone" and allow access when the browser prompts — the permission is only for this page, only while it is open.
  2. Speak at your normal volume and watch the level bar; healthy input peaks in the green and yellow without sitting at zero or pinned at maximum.
  3. Press "Record 5 seconds", say a sentence, then play it back to hear exactly what others will hear on a call.

About this tool

The level meter shows your input volume in real time. If the bar does not move, the usual causes are a muted headset switch, the wrong input device selected in your system settings, or microphone permission being denied to the browser — the page will tell you which problem it detected where it can.

Recording a few seconds and playing it back is the part most people skip and should not: a mic can show a healthy level while sounding muffled, distorted or full of fan noise. Your ears are the final test.

Frequently asked questions

Is my voice recorded or uploaded anywhere?

No. The audio stream stays on your device, the short recording lives only in this tab’s memory, and closing the page deletes it. We could not listen to it if we wanted to.

The browser never asked for permission. Why?

You may have blocked the microphone for this site previously, or the browser itself is denied at the operating-system level (check the privacy settings for microphone access). The status line will point you at the fix.

Why is my level very low or very high?

Low: the mic is far away, muted in hardware, or the system input volume is down. High and distorted: input gain is up too far or you are too close — back off 15–20 cm and aim for peaks in the yellow, not the red.

Which microphone is it testing?

Whichever your operating system has set as the default input. To test a different one, change the default in system sound settings, then reload this page.
