Voice Recorder
Record voice notes, memos and interviews right in your browser — then download the audio file.
This voice recorder runs entirely in your browser using the standard recording APIs. Your audio is captured, held and played back on your own device — it is never uploaded, streamed or stored by us, and every take disappears for good when you close the tab. Download the takes you want to keep.
Not sure your microphone is set up right? Run the microphone test first — it checks levels without recording.
How to use
- Press "Start recording" and allow microphone access — recording begins immediately.
- Use Pause for interruptions instead of stopping; Resume continues the same take.
- Press "Stop & save take" to finish. Each take appears below with a player and a download button.
About this tool
Format note: Chrome, Edge and Firefox save takes as WebM/Opus audio, Safari saves MP4/AAC. Both play in any modern browser and in most editing and transcription tools. If you need an MP3 for an old system, any free audio converter can re-encode the download without quality drama at voice frequencies.
Recording quality is decided mostly by the microphone and the room, not the tool: a headset or a USB microphone a few centimetres from your mouth, in a quiet room with soft furnishings, will beat a studio microphone across a echoing office. The level bar should peak in the green/yellow — constant red means you are too close or too loud and the audio will distort.
Frequently asked questions
Is my voice uploaded anywhere?
No. Recording, playback and the download file are all produced locally in your browser. Nothing reaches our servers — there is nowhere on our side for audio to go.
Which microphone does it use?
Your system default, unless you pick another from the microphone list that appears when more than one is available. The choice applies to the next take.
How long can one take be?
There is no built-in limit. Very long takes use more memory (the recording is held in the tab), so for hour-long sessions, save a take every so often rather than betting everything on one.
Why is my take a .webm file instead of .mp3?
Browsers record in the formats they can encode natively — WebM/Opus in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, MP4/AAC in Safari. Both are standard; converters can make an MP3 from them in seconds if a specific system demands one.
The level bar does not move when I speak. Why?
The open microphone is almost always the wrong one (a muted headset, a virtual device, a camera mic across the room). Pick a different microphone from the list, and check the device is not muted at the hardware switch.
