How it works
Clothing sizes are conventions, not measurements — there is no universal standard, and a US 8, a UK 8 and an EU 38 are three different garments. Conversions in this tool follow common industry mappings, but vanity sizing means the same labelled size drifts between brands and over time.
What actually determines fit are body measurements: chest/bust, waist, hips and inseam for bottoms; neck and sleeve for men’s shirts. When a size chart gives centimetres, trust those over the letter or number.
Two rough rules of thumb: men’s EU suit sizes run about 10 above the US number (US 40 ≈ EU 50), and women’s UK sizes run 4 above US (US 8 ≈ UK 12). Both are approximations — the table below is the safer reference.
Worked examples
Ordering from a UK shop: You wear US women’s 8. That maps to UK 12 and EU 38 — but check the shop’s own chart first, especially for jeans, where cuts vary wildly.
Men’s jacket abroad: A US 40R jacket is roughly an EU 50. The ‘R’ (regular length) has no direct EU equivalent, so compare the listed chest centimetres instead.
