How it works

Currency conversion is one multiplication: target amount = amount x exchange rate. The rate is quoted as units of target currency per one unit of source — EUR/USD 1.08 means one euro buys 1.08 dollars.

Published rates are mid-market reference rates. Banks, cards and airport kiosks all add a margin on top, typically 1-3% for cards and much more at exchange booths, so the rate you actually get is always a little worse than the reference.

Worked examples

Converting 500 euros at 1.08: 500 x 1.08 = $540. Going back: 540 / 1.08 = 500 euros. The round trip only breaks even at the mid-market rate — real exchanges take their cut both ways.

What a 2% card margin costs on $2,000: At the reference rate you would get $2,000 worth of foreign currency; with a 2% margin the card gives you about $1,960 of spending power. On big trips that gap buys dinner.
