Random Team Generator

Paste a list of names and split everyone into random, even teams — nobody picked last, nobody left out.

Splitting a group by hand invites arguments — friends cluster, the same people end up together, and someone always feels picked last. This random team generator takes the whole list at once: paste one name per line, choose either a number of teams or a team size, and everyone is shuffled and dealt into teams in a single pass. Every name appears exactly once, team sizes differ by at most one person, and hitting Generate again re-shuffles from scratch.

One name per line. Everyone on the list is placed on a team — this is a full-group split, not a draw for a single winner (for that, use the Picker or the Name Picker).

How to use

About this tool

That is what separates it from a name picker: the Verystep Picker and Name Picker draw one winner or a single name out of a list, which is what you want for a raffle or for choosing who presents first. This generator is for the opposite job — dividing the entire group into teams for a class activity, a workshop breakout, a sports session or a quiz night, where being left out is the one outcome nobody wants.

Teams can be labelled Team 1, Team 2, Team 3… or with colour names (Red, Blue, Green…) if your group runs on colours. The finished split can be copied as plain text and pasted into a chat, a slide or a document. Everything happens in your browser — the list is never uploaded, saved or shared, so class rosters and employee names stay on your device.

Frequently asked questions

How are the teams made?

The list is shuffled using your browser’s randomiser, then dealt into teams. With “number of teams” the shuffled list is split into that many teams whose sizes differ by at most one; with “per team” it is grouped into chunks of that size, with the last team taking the remainder.

What is the difference between this and a name picker?

A name picker draws one name (or a few) out of a list — the rest are not chosen. This generator assigns every single name to a team. If you need a raffle winner, use the Picker; if you need the whole group divided, use this page.

Can I put 30 students into 6 teams?

Yes. Paste the 30 names, choose “Number of teams” and set 6 — you get six teams of five. Choose “Per team” set to 5 and you get the same split the other way round.

What happens when the numbers do not divide evenly?

Team sizes differ by at most one. Ten people in three teams becomes 4 / 3 / 3; ten people at three per team becomes 3 / 3 / 3 / 1. Nobody is ever dropped to make the maths neat.

Can I re-shuffle if the teams look lopsided?

Yes — press Generate again for a completely new shuffle. There is no memory of previous splits, so each press is an independent draw.

Are the names I paste stored anywhere?

No. The list lives only in this page in your browser and the split is computed locally. Nothing is uploaded, saved to an account or written to persistent storage.
