Final Grade Calculator

What do you need on the final to get your grade?

Final exams with heavy weights can swing a course grade dramatically — this calculator removes the guesswork.

How to use

  1. Enter your current course grade and how much the final is worth.
  2. Set the overall grade you want.
  3. See exactly what final-exam score gets you there.

About this tool

The math: needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.

Your grades stay in your browser.

How it works

The final exam fills the remaining weight of your grade: needed = (target - current x (1 - weight)) / weight. Your current grade already locks in its share; the final can only move the weighted remainder.

If the answer tops 100%, the target is out of reach on the final alone — you would need extra credit or a curve. If it comes out negative, you have already secured the target and could skip the final entirely.

When the target is out of reach, work backward instead: pick the highest grade you can realistically earn on the final, plug it in as the target, and see where you land. That number is the honest goal to aim for.

Worked examples

82% going in, final worth 40%, target 85%: Needed = (85 - 82 x 0.60) / 0.40 = (85 - 49.2) / 0.40 = 35.8 / 0.40 = 89.5%. A strong but reachable final.

Frequently asked questions

What if I need over 100%?

Then the target is mathematically impossible on the final alone — talk to your instructor about extra credit.

Does it work for weighted categories?

Yes — "current grade" should already reflect your weighted coursework average.
