About this tool
Splitting evenly is simplest, but this calculator shows the per-person share so nobody has to do mental math at the table.
All math happens in your browser — the bill amount is never uploaded.
How it works
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip rate: tip = bill x (percent / 100). Add it to the bill for the total, and divide the total by the number of people to split it. There is no compounding or rounding trick — just one multiplication and one division.
When splitting, divide the total (bill plus tip), not the bill alone — otherwise the tip does not get shared. Most people round each person's share to the nearest dollar or fifty cents and let the payer of the bill absorb the remainder.
Customary rates vary by place: 15-20% is standard for US table service, 10% is common in much of Europe, and some countries add a service charge automatically — check the bill before tipping on top of one.
Worked examples
$85 bill, 20% tip, split 4 ways: Tip: 85 x 0.20 = $17.00. Total: 85 + 17 = $102.00. Each person pays 102 / 4 = $25.50.
