About this tool

GSM (grams per square meter) is the global standard; US sellers often use oz/yd²; silk uses momme.

How it works

GSM — grams per square metre — is the worldwide standard for fabric weight, and the number tells you how a fabric behaves: around 100 GSM is light shirting, 200+ is denim territory, 400+ is heavy canvas. Higher GSM means heavier, usually thicker and more durable, but also stiffer.

The US customary unit is ounces per square yard (oz/yd²): 1 oz/yd² = 33.906 GSM. That 12 oz denim on quality jeans labels converts to about 407 GSM — firmly heavyweight.

Silk has its own unit, the momme (厁, pronounced ‘mom-mee’): 1 momme = 4.340 GSM. A 19-momme pillowcase (≈ 82 GSM) is the common quality pick; 22 momme and up is premium bedding weight. Momme measures weight, not thread count — the two are often confused.

Worked examples

How heavy are those jeans?: Label says 12 oz/yd². Multiply by 33.906 → about 407 GSM. That is heavyweight denim: stiff at first, breaks in beautifully.

Silk pillowcase shopping: A 16-momme listing = 16 × 4.34 ≈ 69 GSM — light blouse weight, fine but delicate. For bedding that lasts, look for 22+ momme (≈ 95+ GSM).
