Unix Timestamp Converter

Convert timestamps to dates and back.

Unix time counts seconds since 1970-01-01 UTC β€” the lingua franca of logs, APIs and databases.

… seconds

How to use

  1. See the current epoch timestamp ticking live.
  2. Enter seconds β†’ get the UTC and local date.
  3. Or pick a date β†’ get its timestamp.

About this tool

Milliseconds (13 digits) vs seconds (10 digits) is the classic mix-up; this tool expects seconds.

Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

A Unix timestamp counts seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC (the epoch). 1704067200 is exactly 2024-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. It is timezone-free by definition β€” the same number names the same instant everywhere on Earth.

JavaScript's Date.now() returns milliseconds (Γ—1000), so 1704067200000 looks deceptively similar but is a different unit. Mixing them up is the classic timestamp bug: a seconds value read as milliseconds lands you in January 1970.

Signed 32-bit integers overflow at 2147483647 (2038-01-19 03:14:07 UTC) β€” the Y2K38 problem. Modern systems use 64-bit time, but old embedded devices and binary file formats still hit the wall.

Worked examples

Reading a server log: The log shows 1728000000. Convert it to learn that means 2024-10-04 00:00:00 UTC β€” then convert your local deadline back to epoch seconds for the API call.

JavaScript vs backend: Date.now() gives a 13-digit millisecond value like 1728000000000. Divide by 1000 before comparing it with the 10-digit second timestamps your backend stores.

Seconds or milliseconds?

This tool uses seconds (10 digits). Divide millisecond values by 1000 first.

What timezone is shown?

Both UTC and your local timezone, so there is no ambiguity.

Is anything uploaded?
