Random English words with part of speech and a plain-English meaning for every result.
Need a word β for a writing prompt, a vocabulary drill, a password ingredient or a game β and want to know what it means the second you see it? This generator pulls random English words from a hand-built list of over a thousand common words, and every single result comes with its part of speech and a short meaning written in plain English. No bare word lists, no guessing, no opening a second tab to look things up.
Pick a part of speech, how many words you want and an optional length cap, then hit Generate. Every result comes with its part of speech and a short meaning, so you get usable words β not just a bare list. Stuck on names instead? Quick answers
What does this random word generator give you?
Random English words, each shown with its part of speech (noun, verb, adjective or adverb) and a short plain-English meaning.
The list behind it holds over a thousand common words, all with original one-line definitions written for this site. You can filter by part of speech, request 1, 3, 5 or 10 words, and cap word length at 5 or 8 letters.
Can I generate only nouns, verbs, adjectives or adverbs?
Yes β pick a part of speech before generating and every result will match it.
That makes the tool handy for sentence-building exercises, vocabulary lessons and word games where the word class matters. Choose Any when you want a mixed set.
Where do the words and definitions come from?
The word list was built for this tool, and every definition is an original one-line explanation written for this site.
No dictionary or word-list website was copied. The trade-off is deliberate: a smaller list of words with checked, readable meanings instead of a huge scraped list with none.
How to use
- Choose a part of speech β or leave it on Any for a mix.
- Pick how many words you want: 1, 3, 5 or 10.
- Optionally cap the length at 5 or 8 letters.
- Click Generate words and read each word with its meaning.
- Use Copy all to take the whole set with you.
About this tool
You can narrow things down before you roll. Filter by nouns, verbs, adjectives or adverbs if you are building sentences or labeling exercises. Cap the length at five or eight letters when you need something short β for a hangman round, a naming brainstorm or a word game with tight rules. Ask for one word or ten at a time, and re-roll as often as you like; duplicates within a single batch are removed, so a set of ten really is ten different words.
The word list itself was put together for this tool: common, genuinely useful English words, each with an original one-line meaning written for this site. It is deliberately not a scrape of anyoneβs dictionary β the definitions are short paraphrases in our own words, the kind you would write on a flashcard. That also keeps the list honest: a thousand words we actually wrote meanings for beats ten thousand lifted entries nobody checked.
Everything runs in your browser with cryptographic randomness. Nothing you generate is uploaded, logged or stored β close the tab and the words are gone, which is exactly how a quick tool like this should behave.
Frequently asked questions
How many words are in the list?
Over a thousand common English words, each tagged with a part of speech and given its own short meaning. The list was built for this tool rather than copied from a dictionary site.
Why show a definition for every word?
Because a bare word is only half useful. Seeing the meaning right away makes the results work for vocabulary practice, writing prompts and teaching, without a second lookup.
Can I limit words by length?
Yes. The Max length control caps results at 5 or 8 letters, which suits word games, naming brainstorms and anywhere a short word fits better.
Will I get the same word twice in one batch?
No. Within a single generated set, words are drawn without repetition, so a batch of ten contains ten different words. Generate again and repeats across batches are possible, as with any honest random draw.
Is the selection really random?
Yes. Picks use crypto.getRandomValues with rejection sampling, which avoids the subtle bias you get from a plain modulo on a random number.
Is anything I generate stored?
No. The generator runs entirely in your browser; results are never uploaded or saved anywhere.
