Random Baby Name Generator

Draw random baby names for a girl, a boy or either — from the same name lists as our Random Name Generator — with traditional meanings shown where they are well established.

Naming a baby is one of the few decisions that is both completely free and completely permanent-feeling, which is why shortlists matter more than inspiration. This generator draws names at random from two lists — 355 girl names and 256 boy names, 611 in all — and lets you steer the draw: girls only, boys only or a mix; names starting with a letter you love; short names of five letters or fewer, or longer ones of six or more. Draw ten, keep two, draw ten more. The names you keep saying out loud are the ones worth writing down.

Draw baby names at random — girls, boys or a mix — steered by starting letter and length. A traditional meaning appears beside the names that have a well-established one; the rest are left blank on purpose.

The lists are the same ones used by the Random Name Generator — head there if you need full fictional names with surnames instead. Meanings here are traditional etymologies for a subset of names only; no meaning is shown where the origin is disputed.

⚠️ About the meanings: a meaning is shown only for the subset of names with a well-established traditional etymology — roughly one name in nine on these lists — and it is the traditional derivation of the name (Sophia from the Greek for “wisdom”, for example), not a prediction about a child. Most names on the lists are shown with no meaning at all, deliberately: rather than invent a plausible-sounding origin for every name, this page leaves the field empty where the etymology is disputed or obscure. Name origins are historical claims, and a name you are seriously considering deserves a check in a proper etymological dictionary as well.

    Quick answers

How does the random baby name generator work?

It draws at random from two built-in lists — 355 girl names and 256 boy names, the same lists used by this site’s Random Name Generator. Choose girl, boy or any, optionally set a starting letter and a length (short names up to five letters, or longer names of six or more), then draw 5, 10, 15 or 20 names at a time.

Every name in the filtered pool has an equal chance, drawn with cryptographic randomness. If a filter leaves no names at all — a rare letter combined with the short-length setting, for instance — the page tells you and draws nothing rather than quietly ignoring your filter.

Why do only some baby names show a meaning?

Because only some names have a well-established traditional etymology. This page shows a meaning for a subset of about one name in nine — names like Sophia (Greek, “wisdom”) or Victor (Latin, “conqueror”) — and leaves the rest blank rather than inventing origins for names whose history is disputed or unknown.

Baby-name meanings on the internet are frequently made up or copied from site to site until a guess looks like a fact. The subset here is limited to derivations found in standard etymological references. If a name you love shows no meaning, that says something about the record-keeping of history, not about the name.

Are these the same names as the Random Name Generator?

Yes — the identical lists: 355 girl (female) names and 256 boy (male) names, shared between the two tools. This page adds baby-focused controls (starting letter, name length, meanings for the subset that has them); the general Random Name Generator instead pairs first names with surnames to make full fictional names.

Use this page when you are naming a baby and want first names only, steered by letter and length. Use the Random Name Generator when you need a full name — first plus surname — for a character, a test account or an example in a document.

    How to use

    1. Choose Girl, Boy or Any — Any draws from both lists together, all 611 names.
    2. Optionally type a single starting letter to keep only names beginning with it.
    3. Optionally filter by length: short names (five letters or fewer) or longer names (six letters or more).
    4. Choose how many names to draw — 5, 10, 15 or 20 — and press Generate names.
    5. Note the meanings shown beside some names, copy the batch if you want to keep it, and press again for a fresh draw.

    About this tool

The lists are the same ones behind this site’s Random Name Generator, and they were built the same way: common first names of the kind published in public name statistics — the census and birth-record style lists every country publishes — assembled for this site rather than copied from a baby-name website. That shared base is deliberate. It means the flavour is consistent (familiar, pronounceable names rather than exotic novelties), and it means this page adds what the general name generator does not have: the baby-specific steering above, plus meanings.

Meanings are handled conservatively, because baby-name etymology is a swamp of confident invention. A meaning appears beside a name only where the traditional etymology is well established — Sophia is Greek for wisdom, Benjamin is Hebrew for “son of the right hand”, Felix is Latin for lucky. For the large majority of names, nothing is shown, and that blank is honest: many popular names have disputed, layered or simply unknown origins, and inventing a sweet meaning for them would be a small fraud repeated hundreds of times. Roughly one name in nine drawn will carry a meaning; treat the others as names to judge by sound, family and feel, which is how most names are actually chosen.

A practical way to use the draw: generate in batches, and test survivors properly — say each one aloud with your surname, shout it as if across a playground, check the initials, and live with the top three for a week before deciding. Randomness helps here precisely because it breaks the loop of the same dozen names every listicle recycles; a name you would never have searched for can turn out to be the one. Nothing you draw is stored or sent anywhere — the lists live in this page and your shortlist exists only if you copy it.

    Frequently asked questions

How many names are in the generator?

611 first names in total: 355 girl names and 256 boy names. The lists are the same self-built lists used by this site’s Random Name Generator — common first names of the kind published in public name statistics, assembled for this site, not scraped from a baby-name website.

Why does this page exist if there is already a Random Name Generator?

Different job. The Random Name Generator builds full fictional names — first name plus surname — for characters, examples and test data. This page is for naming an actual baby: first names only, with controls parents ask for (girl or boy, a starting letter, short versus longer names) and traditional meanings where they are reliably known. Same lists underneath, different steering on top.

Can I trust the meanings shown?

They are traditional etymologies, limited to a subset of about 70 names where the derivation is well established in standard references — Greek, Latin, Hebrew and Germanic roots that are not seriously disputed. They describe where a name historically comes from, nothing more. For a name you are seriously considering, a proper etymological dictionary is still worth a look.

Why is there no meaning for the name I like?

Because its origin is disputed, layered through several languages, or simply not recorded clearly — which is true of a great many popular names. This page would rather show nothing than dress up a guess as a fact. Judge the name by sound, spelling, family associations and how it sits with your surname; those matter more in daily life than etymology does.

What if my letter and length filters match no names?

The page says so plainly and draws nothing — it never silently drops a filter to produce a result. Loosen one setting (drop the length filter, or try a commoner letter) and generate again. Rare starting letters such as X and Q hold only a handful of names on any realistic list.

    Is anything I generate stored?

No. The lists and the draw live entirely in this page in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, saved or tracked, and there is no account. Copy a batch you like before closing the tab if you want to keep it.
