About this tool
The math works backwards. Your existing savings keep growing at the APY you enter, and the calculator solves for the level monthly deposit that fills the remaining gap. Longer deadlines and higher APY both shrink the deposit — which is why starting early beats saving harder later.
It works for any goal with a number and a date: three to six months of expenses as an emergency fund, a house deposit, a wedding, a sabbatical. If the monthly figure feels steep, extend the deadline a little and watch it drop — that trade-off is the whole point of seeing the number.
Frequently asked questions
What APY should I enter?
Use the APY of the account the money will actually sit in — high-yield savings accounts publish theirs prominently. If you are not sure, 0% gives you the no-interest worst case.
Does interest really make that much difference?
On the default example it covers over $1,200 of a $20,000 goal. The longer the deadline, the bigger the share interest pays — at 10 years it can cover a quarter or more of the goal.
What if I can save more than the number shown?
You will simply arrive early. Rerun the calculator with a shorter deadline to see your new date, or keep the date and enjoy a bigger cushion.
