About this tool
JPG drops transparency (white background is added); PNG and WebP keep it.
Conversion runs entirely on your device.
How it works
PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression: every pixel survives exactly, which suits logos, screenshots, and text — but photographs stay large. JPEG uses lossy DCT compression tuned for human vision: it discards fine detail our eyes barely register, shrinking photos 5–10×, with quality 80–90 looking nearly identical to the original.
WebP covers both jobs: its lossy mode beats JPEG by roughly 25–30% at the same visual quality, and its lossless mode beats PNG by about 25%. Every modern browser supports it, which is why WebP is now the default recommendation for web images.
Conversion re-encodes pixels from one codec to another. PNG to JPEG is one-way — discarded detail never comes back — while JPEG to PNG merely wraps the same degraded pixels in a bigger file. Always convert from the highest-quality source you have.
Worked examples
Speeding up a landing page: Convert a 1.8 MB PNG screenshot-style hero to WebP and it typically lands around 400–600 KB with no visible difference — a meaningful cut to mobile load time.
Photos are already JPEG: Camera JPGs gain little from converting. The biggest wins come from PNG screenshots of app interfaces, where flat areas of color compress extremely well as WebP.
