ASCII Table Reference

Look up ASCII codes: char, decimal, hex.

ASCII maps 128 characters to numbers — the foundation every text encoding builds on.

How to use

  1. Browse the full printable ASCII table.
  2. Or search by character, decimal or hex code.
  3. Copy codes straight into your code.

About this tool

Developers look up codes for key handling, URL encoding and debugging mysterious characters.

How it works

ASCII maps 128 values (0–127) to characters. Codes 0–31 are control codes inherited from the teletype era (newline, tab, escape), 32 is the space, 33–126 are printable characters (! through ~), and 127 is DEL. All of basic English text fits in 7 bits.

The groups sit in order: digits '0'–'9' are 48–57, uppercase 'A'–'Z' are 65–90, lowercase 'a'–'z' are 97–122. That ordering is why converting case is just adding or subtracting 32 — and why uppercase sorts before lowercase in raw byte order.

Modern text is UTF-8, which stays backward-compatible: its first 128 code points are exactly ASCII. Bytes 128–255 are 'extended ASCII' and mean different things in different encodings (Latin-1, Windows-1252) — the classic source of mojibake.

Worked examples

Why Zebra sorts before apple: 'Z' is 90 and 'a' is 97, so a naive byte-order sort puts 'Zebra' before 'apple'. Case-insensitive sorting exists precisely because of this table.

Splitting an HTTP response by hand: Headers end with CRLF CRLF — bytes 13, 10, 13, 10. Knowing the codes lets you find the split point in a raw stream while debugging.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ASCII and Unicode?

ASCII covers 128 characters; Unicode extends the same idea to every writing system on Earth.

Why 0x41 for "A"?

Hexadecimal is compact for byte values — 0x41 = 65 decimal.

Is anything tracked?

No.
