IBAN Validator
Check an IBAN for typos before you send money — mod-97 validation and full structure breakdown.
An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) packs a country code, two check digits and the domestic bank-and-account number into one string of up to 34 characters. The two check digits are the clever part: they are computed with the mod-97 algorithm, so a single mistyped digit — or two digits swapped — makes the whole number fail validation before any money moves.
How to use
- Paste or type the IBAN — spaces do not matter and lowercase is fine.
- Press Validate (or hit Enter).
- Read the verdict and, for supported countries, the structure breakdown: country, check digits, bank code and account number.
About this tool
This validator performs the full standard check locally in your browser: allowed characters, the correct length for the country, and the mod-97 checksum. For major countries it also splits out the bank code and account number, which is handy when a payment form asks for them separately.
What validation cannot do is just as important: it proves the number is well-formed, not that the account exists, is open, or belongs to your intended recipient. Banks reject malformed IBANs, but a well-formed IBAN pointing at the wrong person will still send your money to them — verify details for large payments.
Frequently asked questions
What does the mod-97 check actually prove?
That the number is internally consistent: the check digits agree with the rest of the IBAN under the ISO 13616 algorithm. It catches nearly all copying typos, but says nothing about whether the account exists.
My IBAN failed but I copied it carefully. What now?
Check the length first (this tool tells you the expected length for the country), then compare character by character — the classic culprits are 0 vs O, 1 vs I, and a dropped digit in the long account section. If it still fails, ask the recipient to re-send it from their bank, not from memory.
Is it safe to paste a real IBAN here?
The check runs entirely in your browser; the IBAN is never sent or stored. IBANs are also designed to be shared — they appear on invoices — but treat them like any financial detail and avoid posting them publicly.
Why does the tool not break down my country’s IBAN?
Bank-code structures differ by country and we cover the most common ones in detail. For other countries you still get full validation and the grouped BBAN — the raw material is identical, just without the labelled split.
